Esther Louise (Chantrey) Gaines

Esther Louise Gaines, 96, a lifelong resident of the Shenango Valley, passed away January 9th, 2018 at Countryside Nursing Home in Mercer, PA.
Mrs. Gaines was born on June 22nd, 1921 in Sharon, PA to George and Lois (Baker) Chantrey. She and her husband Frank were married in 1941. Frank passed away in 1985.
She was an active and charter member of East Side Church (Baptist-Disciples of Christ) in Sharon. She was a member of the Chancel choir and served in many capacities including Women’s Fellowship, teacher, trustee, and deaconess. For many years she decorated the church for Christmas and Easter holidays.
She graduated from Hickory High School in 1939 and the Shenango Valley Commercial Institute in 1941 and subsequently worked in the Accounting Department at Westinghouse.
Mrs. Gaines was well known in the valley for her dressmaking and tailoring skills. She and her husband were members of the Pennsylvania Gladioli Society and they grew flowers for valley florists.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Lynn (Craig) Tipton of Perry, OH, two grandsons, Jonathan (Becky) Tipton of Aurora, OH, Jeffrey (Tiffany) Tipton of Palmyra, PA. She is also survived by four great grandchildren, Brian and Gavin Tipton, Kaelyn and Keaton Tipton, and sister, Mary Ruth Woods of Transfer, PA.
Gifts in her memory may be sent to the Memorial Fund of East Side Church, Sharon or the American Cancer Society or Three Rivers Hospice Patient Care Fund, in memory of Esther.
Friends may call Monday January 15th, 2018 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the SHERMAN Funeral Home & Cremation Service 2201 Highland Rd. Hermitage, PA 16148.
Funeral Services will be held Monday January 15th, 2018 at 11:00 am in the SHERMAN Funeral Home with Pastor Craig Thompson, officiating.
Burial will take place in Oakwood Cemetery.
