John Chovan, 95, of Sharpsville, passed away peacefully on Sunday September 11th, 2016 at his home in Sharpsville, PA.
He was born on April 10th, 1921, in Sharon, Pennsylvania, the sixth child of Andrew and Suzanne (Dacko) Chovan’s seven children.
Mr. Chovan attended Hubbard High School and fought in World War II serving in the European Theater as part of the first Army, First Infantry Division. Upon his return from the service, John married Mary Warso of Sharpsville on January 31, 1946, at St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Farrell. John and Mary were married for more than fifty years and raised five children together.
After his return from Europe he began a career as warehouseman with Golden Dawn Foods retiring in 1983, after nearly forty years of service.
John was a life-long and active parishioner of St. Michael’s serving on many committees ranging from maintenance, to fund raising, to catering, the annual festival, as well as being instrumental in moving St. Michael’s from Farrell to its present location in Hermitage. He took special pride in being a member of the heralded “Fist Team” and the master chef of St. Michael’s “Famous Bingo Kitchen Hotdogs”. It seems only fitting that John became the oldest living parishioner in 2016
In his immediate family he leaves to cherish his memory, sons John Paul (Barbara) Chovan, Michael Richard (Linda) Chovan, Joseph Robert (Patti) Chovan and daughters Mary Anne (Paul) Bajorek and Martha Anne (Donald) Kelly. Ten grandchildren: Michael, Stephen, Christopher, Nicole, Megan, Michelle, Jonathan, Stephanie, Jeffrey, and Richard, as well as nine great-grandchildren: Sophie, Heidi, Brooke, Robert, Claire, Corrine, Brandon, Matthew, and Aubrey will also miss John. His extended family includes many nieces, great nieces, nephews, and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, parents Andrew and Suzanne, Sisters Mary Golubic, Helen Kernick, and Suzanne Kwaciak, brothers Andrew, Joseph, and Edward, as well as several cousins, in-laws, and two nephews. Also, his pet cat Shadow.
John was the last of his family’s generation. He will be missed by those whose lives he touched.
Friends may call Wednesday, September 14th, 2016, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Stephen J. Sherman Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 2201 Highland Rd. Hermitage, PA.
Panachida prayer service will be offered Thursday, September 15th, 2016, 10:00 am at the Stephen J. Sherman Funeral Home.
Mass of Divine Liturgy will be held on Thursday, September 15th, 2016, 10:30 am at St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church with Father Kevin Marks, officiating.
Burial will take place in St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Cemetery with full military honors.
