Mary (Mallick) Miller, 97, of South Pymatuning Township, Sharpsville, passed away peacefully at St. John XXIII Home on December 20th, 2024.
Born on August 22nd, 1927, in Schuylkill County, PA, Mary was the eldest of five children of the late Peter and Paraska “Pearl” Mallick. A 1945 graduate of Sharpsville High School, she married the late Nevin Miller in 1954 and together they raised three children. Mary worked as a secretary for Westinghouse in Sharon, PA, and later for the South Pymatuning Township.
Mary took great pride in her Slovak heritage as a first-generation American. Fluent in Slovak, she maintained correspondence with relatives in Slovakia throughout her life. She was a devoted and active member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir and participated in the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild, Rosary Society, and the Greek Catholic Union. Mary contributed to many church activities, including the catering group, teaching catechism, and helping with the church bazaar every summer for many years.
An avid traveler, Mary visited Florida, Maine, California, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. She made multiple trips to Slovakia and also traveled to Israel and Italy, where she had the honor of a private audience with Pope John Paul II in Rome.
In her community, Mary served as treasurer of the South Pymatuning Township Homemakers Group and as a board member of the Mercer County chapter of NAMI. She found joy in cooking, baking, sewing, and gardening. Known for her “green thumb,” friends and neighbors would stop by to pick dill she would grow at the side of her house. Mary will be remembered for her gratitude, graciousness, and love of socializing, always bringing warmth and kindness to those around her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and four siblings: Charles “Bill” Mallick, Anne Goda, John Mallick, and Steve Mallick. Mary is survived by her three children, Marsha Miller Landfried, Nevin Miller, and Marlo Miller Espejo (Rafael); two grandchildren, Britta Forgie (Kevin) and Hilary Landfried; two great-granddaughters; and her sister-in-law, Lucy Mallick.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Mary’s dear friends Nancy Hoovler, Jan Gunsley, and Martha Stambaugh for their companionship, as well as to her medical and dental care team: Dr. Jay Porter, Dr. Gregory George, Dr. Stephanie Misco Shelestak, and Stephanie Albert, for their excellent care. A particularly warm thanks to the all the staff at St. John XXIII Home for their wonderful and compassionate care.
