Michael Vasil, 93, of Hermitage, passed away peacefully on Friday November 24th, 2017 at John XXIII Nursing Home in Hermitage, PA.
Michael was born on October 28th, 1924 to John and Anna (Ostoverhy) Vasil in Farrell, PA. Michael left school early to begin working at Westinghouse, but soon after headed to Buffalo, NY to enlist in the United States Marine Corps serving honorably in the Pacific Theater of WWII for MAG-61 (Marine Air Group). He was a mechanic on various islands maintaining PBJ bombers (B-25s) for VMB-612 as one of the "Rams" under the command of LtCol Jack R. Cram. He returned to Sharon after discharge as a Sergeant and resumed working at Westinghouse until retirement after 42 years of service.
On January 11th, 1958 he married his wife, the late, Irene (Kosty) Vasil, settling in Hermitage and raising two sons.
He enjoyed football, art, his Carpatho Rusyn heritage, and the outdoors including hunting, fishing and mushroom picking earlier in life. Later, he could be seen walking miles in the area of his home. He spent many hours caring for his home, one of the first in the "rural" Hickory Twp. area of Holly Lane. Michael was an avid reader unlimited by the author or topic. Most of his time later in life centered around his granddaughters.
He was a member of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Hermitage and a member of the American Legion.
Michael is survived by two sons, Michael J. Vasil and wife Suzanne of Hermitage, Daniel J. Vasil and wife Kimberly of St. Charles, Illinois; his special granddaughters, Kristiana, Alyssa, Kayleen, and Karina; and two brothers, John P. Vasil of Hermitage, and Norbert P. Vasil of Sharon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene; a brother, Infant Michael; and sisters, Anna Fedak from Stratford, CT and Mary Kandro of Bridgeport, CT.
Friends may call Wednesday November 29th, 2017 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Stephen J. Sherman Funeral Home & Cremation Service 2201 Highland Rd. Hermitage, PA.
Panachida prayer service will be offered Thursday November 30th, 2017 at 10:30 am in the funeral home.
Funeral Divine Liturgy will be held Thursday November 30th, 2017 at 11:00 am in St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church Hermitage, PA with Father Kevin Marks, officiating.
Burial will take place in St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Cemetery. Full military honors will be offered by the Reynolds VFW Honor Guard.
