Command Sergeant Major Philip J. Stanton Sr., 90, of West Middlesex passed away peacefully on March 22nd, 2021 following a brief illness.
CSM Stanton was a decorated Vietnam War Veteran. He served with the 1st Cavalry Division and the 647th QM Company near An Kye Vietnam from 1968 to 1969 and also the local 402nd QM Battalion (Petroleum Operations Battalion) US Army Reserve Center in Farrell, PA where he served as Staff Administrative Specialist. He retired from the US Army Reserve Center in Farrell, PA at the rank of Command Sergeant Major of the 402nd Battalion with 40 years of service.
CSM Stanton was the recipient of numerous honors and medals which included the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with V Device, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Device, and many other medals and awards from his service.
He was born October 1st, 1930 in Sharon, PA to Althea (Atkinson) Edward Leo Stanton Sr. Philip was a graduate of Farrell High School class of 1949. He was a member of Church of the Good Shepherd in West Middlesex, PA and was a Third Degree, member of the Knights of Columbus in Sharon, PA.
Philip was also a life member of the Farrell VFW Post 5286 where he served as Post Commander, the Wheatland American Legion Post 432, West Middlesex VFW Post 6233 where he served as Service Officer, and a member of DAV Charter 55 in Sharon, PA. He was also a founding member and past president of the Shenango Township Volunteer Fire Department.
He was employed at the former Sharon Steel Corp. as an electrical lineman and at Shenango Steel Buildings as electrical supervisor.
Philip is survived by his wife, Julia R. (Petrucci) Stanton at home, daughters, Shirley D. (Gary) Denamen Sr., Phyllis J. (Harry) Mammarelli III, son, Philip J. Stanton Jr., grandchildren, Gary (Jennie) Denamen Jr., Melissa (Gregory) Maney, Matthew E. Stanton and his child, Angela Stanton and her children, Angelia (Steve) Sherman II, Santino A. Mammarelli, great grandchildren, Austin, Addison, Annie, Arielle, Aulani, Stanton, Gabryella, Kolton, and Stephen III. Also surviving is his sister, Pastor Elizabeth G. Stanton Cooper, brother in law, Frank (Dolly) Petrucci, sister in law, Shirley Watson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Chief Petty Officer Edward L. (Jeanie) Stanton Jr., Colonel Thomas R. (Marilyn) Stanton, William "Butch" Stanton, his in laws, Frank (Sara) Petrucci, brothers in law, William Petrucci, and Raymond Watson.
Services will be held privately with full military honors.
Burial will take place in Haywood Cemetery West Middlesex, PA.
