Sophia Domila Obituary

Sophia Frances Domila died Saturday, June 4, 2016 in Roswell, Georgia. She had been a resident at Brookdale Historic Roswell for the past two years. She was 93 years old.
Sophia was born in New Castle, Pennsylvania on March 22, 1923 to Peter and Frances Giermanski Carr.
She graduated from New Castle High School and worked for Shenango Pottery as a finisher.
She was a member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Hermitage. In Roswell, Georgia she attended The Catholic Church of St. Anne.
She married Michael Domila on September 27, 1947. They lived in Sharon, Pennsylvania in the home that Michael built where they raised their three daughters. They lived there for 66 years until Michael’s death in March of 2014.
Sophia was gifted with an abundance of creativity. She was a talented seamstress, flower arranger and baker. There was nothing Sophia couldn’t do. Above all, she loved baking, especially working with dough. She was always looking for new recipes, and wasn’t afraid to share her results with her family and friends. One never left her house empty-handed. There were always cookies to share, or a nut roll and banana bread in the freezer for the lucky visitor.
One of her most fulfilling accomplishments was working at Daffin’s Candies in Sharon for 25 years as a candy decorator. She was the creator of their famous Chocolate Kingdom which still is on exhibit in their store. It all started with a castle made from Pringles cans in her kitchen. If you look closely, you can see her initial “S” in the design of the castle walls. She soon added a chocolate merry go round, chocolate bunnies on swing sets and other chocolate pieces which eventually culminated into an entire chocolate village. She often said, even into her 90’s, that she wished she hadn’t retired. She really loved being creative and making people happy.
Sophia is survived by three daughters: Kathy de Campos of Bativia, Ohio and her husband Jorge de Campos, Donna Domila of Portland, Oregon and her husband Duane Smelser, and Mary Lynn Cagle of Marietta, Georgia and her husband Tripp Cagle; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Michael Domila; sister Mary L. Kienast, and twin sister Jane M. Richards.
